Nippon Television Network Corporation (Nippon TV), also known as NTV or 日テレ (Nittere), is a pioneering Japanese television network headquartered in Minato, Tokyo. Established on October 28, 1952, it became Asia’s first commercial broadcaster when it commenced operations on August 28, 1953. The network is owned by Nippon Television Holdings, a subsidiary of The Yomiuri Shimbun Holdings, Japan's largest media conglomerate.

Historical Milestones

  • 1953: Nippon TV began broadcasting, marking the start of commercial television in Asia.

  • 1959: The company was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.

  • 1960: Granted a license for color TV broadcasting.

  • 1966: Launched the Nippon News Network (NNN), a national news network.

Programming and Cultural Contributions

Nippon TV is renowned for its diverse programming, including news, dramas, variety shows, sports, and anime. It has produced and aired popular series such as Detective Conan, Death Note, and Hajime no Ippo. The network also holds exclusive broadcasting rights to the entire Studio Ghibli catalog.

In addition to entertainment, Nippon TV has been involved in cultural projects, such as sponsoring the renovation of the Sistine Chapel's ceiling in the Vatican City during the 1980s.

Digital Expansion

Recognizing the shift towards digital media, Nippon TV launched its satellite digital broadcast in December 2000 and its terrestrial digital broadcast in December 2003. The acquisition of Hulu Japan in 2014 further solidified its presence in the digital streaming market.

Global Reach
