PLOT

Road to HiGH&LOW serves as both a prequel and a recap of the events leading up to the main HiGH&LOW series. It delves into the backstory of the five main gangs that control the S.W.O.R.D. area—a lawless region named after the initials of the dominant groups: Sannoh Rengokai (Hoodlum Squad), White Rascals, Oya High School, Rude Boys, and Daruma Ikka. The film begins by focusing on the fall of the mighty gang Mugen, whose disbandment created the power vacuum that led to the rise of these factions. We see the conflict and loyalty that once defined Mugen, especially between its leaders, the Amamiya brothers and the Sannoh Hoodlum Squad.

The story follows Cobra and Yamato, once Mugen members, as they try to protect their neighborhood of Sannoh while grappling with their violent pasts. Their decision to leave Mugen behind puts them on a new path—one that involves gathering allies, defending their turf, and standing up for what they believe in. This transformation from violent thugs to protectors sets the stage for their emergence as leaders of the Sannoh Rengokai. Through their journey, we see the camaraderie that bonds them with their childhood friend Noboru, whose tragic fate adds emotional weight to the plot.

Parallel to this, the film introduces the other gangs and their respective ideologies. The stylish and ruthless White Rascals fight to protect women, while the Rude Boys, led by Smoky, survive in a scrapyard city built on loyalty. Daruma Ikka is fueled by revenge, seeking retribution against Mugen for past wrongs, and Oya High School is a school of fighters where strength earns respect.
