The Kingdom (2019) also known as Kingu: Teni o Tsugu Mono is a Japanese historical action film directed by Shinsuke Sato, based on Yasuhisa Hara’s popular manga series Kingdom.
Set during China’s Warring States period, the story follows Xin (Shin), a war orphan who dreams of rising from slavery to become the greatest general under the heavens. Alongside his close friend Piao, he trains relentlessly every day to achieve this dream. Their lives change dramatically when Piao is taken to serve at the royal palace.
Soon after, Shin learns that Piao has been killed in a violent coup. Before dying, Piao entrusts Shin with a mission to help a young man named Ying Zheng, the rightful King of Qin, reclaim his throne. To Shin’s shock, Ying Zheng looks exactly like Piao, and although he initially resents the king for the loss of his friend, he eventually joins forces with him.
Together, they embark on a perilous journey across dangerous lands, facing assassins, rival warlords, and betrayal from within the kingdom. Through their struggles, Shin begins to understand the magnitude of his dream and the meaning of true leadership.
As the battles intensify, Shin proves his courage on the battlefield and earns his first taste of recognition as a warrior. Meanwhile, Ying Zheng’s vision of uniting all of China begins to take shape marking the beginning of their legendary destinies.
