Kosuke Mukai (向井康介) is a Japanese screenwriter and director known for his emotionally nuanced, character-driven storytelling that has left a lasting mark on modern Japanese cinema. Born on January 17, 1977, in Miyoshi, Tokushima Prefecture, Mukai studied at the Osaka University of Arts, where he majored in visual arts. His early work included roles as a lighting and editing assistant, and his collaboration with director Nobuhiro Yamashita on the student film Hazy Life (1999) marked the beginning of a successful creative partnership.
Mukai made his screenwriting debut in the early 2000s and quickly gained attention for his distinct ability to portray everyday life with warmth, subtle humor, and emotional depth.
